Hi Everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. In today's video I am sharing about some cow bones we found in Wyoming. As a vet, it is fun to identify the bones and then put the bones back together. A cow skeleton, like other mammals, has a full complement of bones that support its structure and enable movement. Here's a general breakdown of the main bones in a cow skeleton: Axial Skeleton (center of the body): Skull – Protects the brain; includes the jaw (mandible) and horn cores (if present). Vertebral Column (Spine) – Divided into: Cervical Vertebrae (neck) – 7 bones Thoracic Vertebrae (chest, with ribs) – ~13 bones Lumbar Vertebrae (lower back) – ~6 bones Sacrum (fused vertebrae in the pelvic region) – ~5 bones Caudal Vertebrae (tail) – ~18-20 bones Ribs – Usually 13 pairs, attached to the thoracic vertebrae. Sternum – Breastbone, where the front of the ribs connect. Appendicular Skeleton (limbs): Forelimbs: Scapula – Shoulder blade Humerus – Upper arm bone Radius and Ulna – Forearm bones (partially fused) Carpals – Wrist bones Metacarpals – Hand bones (fused into a large cannon bone) Phalanges – Toe bones (including the hoof) Hindlimbs: Pelvis – Hip bones (ilium, ischium, pubis) Femur – Thigh bone Patella – Kneecap Tibia and Fibula – Lower leg bones (fibula is very reduced) Tarsals – Ankle bones Metatarsals – Foot bones (also form a cannon bone) Phalanges – Toe bones (in hooves, similar to front)
