In 1945, P-47's from 405th Fighter Group flew their final mission from Kitzingen to what they believed was a POW camp. The mission to drop some medicine & food included P-47 Dottie Mae flown by Lt. Henry Mohr. BUT this camp did NOT hold POW's and was actually KZ Ebensee, a slave-labor camp which built a large tunnel system of over 7 kilometers under the mountains. The camp records indicated that 27,000 inmates were sent to KZ Ebensee with most coming from Mauthausen. This last P-47 mission resulted in the lost of Dottie Mae but miraculously, Lt. Henry Mohr was rescued by two young Austrian girls. National Geographic made a video about this mission and this is just a short look at the tunnels inside including the KZ Ebensee Concentration Camp Memorial. The original Gate Archway is still retained and seen at 0:19 in video but the surrounding area now has many new houses which were built in recent years. Unknown to P-47 pilots, the US Army ground forces had arrived two days prior and (3rd Cavalry) drove their tanks thru this gate. Video includes scenes around the Memorial Site and some markers depicting events. Of the seven kilometers of tunnels, only about five hundred meters is open to the public. Most of the remaining tunnels are permanently blocked. But this video gives a idea of the size & length starting at et 03:16. The stated purpose of tunnels was for fuel production and armament manufacture including V2 Rocket parts and parts for the Me262 jet.
