New York braces for winter storm and extreme cold, prompting state of emergency

New York state is preparing for extreme winter weather this weekend that is expected to bring heavy snow and life-threatening cold temperatures. Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Friday afternoon as statewide real-feel temperatures are expected to dip into the negatives later in the night. A large winter storm is set to begin Sunday morning and continue into Monday, potentially bringing more than a foot of snow to the Rochester region and several other parts of the state. Officials in Monroe County held a press conference Friday, issuing a warning to drivers, pedestrians and anyone who may be outdoors this weekend. "We're asking residents to please try to remain indoors as much as possible," said County Executive Adam Bello. "If you must travel, please drive with extreme caution, especially as the snow and wind intensifies." Several airlines have canceled thousands of flights ahead of the storm and are waiving rebooking fees. Some local churches have canceled Sunday services, and some school districts, including Rochester and Pittsford, have canceled all events and activities scheduled for Sunday. County officials said plows and salt crews are being prepared. Drivers are reminded to slow down near snowplows and give them plenty of space as they work to clear the roads. "This weather slows everything down, right?" said Sheriff Todd Baxter. "It slows our preparation. It slows our response time. It slows recovery from a scene. Just think about motor vehicle accidents probably clogging up an intersection. Everything's going to go much slower just to get that scene processed, to get the vehicles out of that intersection. So everything needs to slow down." Code Blue will be in effect and warming centers will be available for unhoused people. They can request free transportation via RTS to a warming shelter in the City of Rochester at any bus stop.
