For the past week, animal care staff members have observed the mother, Jessica, placing the baby boy on her back. This new posture provides Jessica with more mobility, allowing her to move on all fours, using both hands to forage for food items that keepers scatter throughout the exhibit. Riding on his mother’s back is also beneficial for the five-pound baby, as it allows him to see his surroundings and gives him the opportunity to observe other gorillas and start learning about the social dynamics of the troop. “Gorillas are very social. Paul Donn (the father) has always been very involved since this baby was born. Now that he’s a bit more mobile and vocalizing more, Paul Donn will respond when he hears the baby yell out. He will give a nice little grumble to say ‘you’re okay little guy, and I’m here if you need anything,’” said Nerissa Foland, senior keeper at the San Diego Zoo. This infant is part of a troop that includes silverback leader Paul Donn, 26, mother Jessica, 34, and another female, Ndjia, who is 20 years old. The troop is expected to have access to the outdoor exhibit as long as weather permits. San Diego Zoo Global is taking a leadership role in conservation awareness and hosts more than 275,000 schoolchildren on grounds at the San Diego Zoo each year. Guests viewing the gorillas at the San Diego Zoo can observe these animals and learn about how these animals are protected from threats they face in the wild such as habitat loss.
