Welcome to the DETECt Crime Series Webinar! The crime series is a great way to study what makes TV series tick. Crime is, in terms of production volume and ratings, the most popular fiction genre in Europe. But why? What is the appeal of crime shows? And, more importantly, how can we write our own? Over the next ten weeks we’ll be releasing a new episode every Wednesday. In each episode in this series we are going to discuss one specific element found in TV crime series. Episode 2: The Police Procedural In this episode, we take a look at the most common format of crime shows, the „classic“ police procedural. It’s a classic because it’s been a staple of TV programming for almost seventy years. But how does it actually work in generating story? Host Benjamin Harris talks to writer-producer Julia Fontana from the show Lucifer and writer, producer and Serial Eyes instructor Nicola Lusuardi about character, format and theme in crime procedurals. Case studies include Lucifer (Fox/Netflix, 2015- ), Professor T (ZDF, 2017-2020), and Der letzte Bulle (The Last Cop, SAT1, 2010-2014).
