Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive inflammatory lung disease that results in pulmonary airflow obstruction. The two main conditions that make up COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis, which cause symptoms like wheezing, difficulty breathing, and coughing up sputum. Bronchoscopic thermal vapor ablation (BTVA) is one of the newer therapies used to treat severe COPD. The BTVA procedure, which is an endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) procedure, is used to treat patients with a severe form of the disease who do not respond to conventional treatment. It is a non-invasive procedure in which a thin tube called a bronchoscope is guided through the mouth, down to the airways, and to the diseased areas of the lung. The vapor is then delivered to a small area of the lung that is severely diseased (overinflated), ablating the diseased tissue. The ablated tissue is then removed by the body as part of the natural healing process. Currently, BTVA is the only lung volume reduction procedure available in India.
