The temple complex underwent several renovations and expansions over the centuries, with the most significant changes occurring during the 19th century. In 1832, King Rama III commissioned the construction of a new reclining Buddha statue to replace an older statue that had been damaged by time and the elements. The new statue was designed and built by a team of artisans. The statue measures 46 meters long and 15 meters high, making it one of the largest Buddha statues in the world! The reclining Buddha statue was later covered in gold leaf by King Rama III, and the temple complex became known as the birthplace of traditional Thai massage.
