The Real Effects of EU's Animal Testing Ban in China

I did this video because I question whether EU’s animal testing ban for cosmetics is really helping save more animals. I know it is a controversial issue and will trigger some debates. It may even upset some animal right groups, but I think it’s time someone speaks up and asks for a reality check. This marks the 5th year of EU’s animal testing ban for cosmetics. This means that in the past 5 years, cruelty-free brands haven’t been able to enter the Chinese market. What I see is an extremely unfair market for small and natural brands. Under this ban, the small brands will always stay small while big brands continue to get bigger. So, we’ve got 1.3 billion consumers using harmful chemical cosmetics and personal care products every day. Ok, you can say it’s the Chinese government’s problem by not lifting the animal testing requirements for cosmetics so it’s too bad for its people who will have die from cancers using these toxic chemicals, but how about the coral reefs and hundreds of millions of fishes that are being killed because of the chemical sunscreens and toxic chemicals that go into the rivers and the oceans when Chinese consumers shower and wash their face or hair using those chemical cosmetics and personal care products? Is this ban effective in pushing the Chinese government to stop animal testing? No, it only furthers the growth of local Chinese brands while all the wonderful healthy brands from other countries still can’t enter the market. The animal rights groups are understandably adhering to its principle against animal testing, but this EU animal testing ban and cruelty-free scheme seems almost too conveniently advantageous to big cosmetic companies while leaving all the smaller natural brands in the dust. Now, five years have passed, and the more I look at it, the more suspicious and utterly unfair it seems. I think it’s time someone speaks up. I think it’s time to revisit this issue and do a reality check. I am against animal testing, but I am also the one who is on the ground day in and day out trying to promote healthy and sustainable lifestyle in China. After five years, I want you to know the way you guys are going about it is NOT working. Do I have a solution? I don’t have a straight answer because whatever I come up with will probably be controversial. But here are my questions for these four groups: 1. To the EU regulators: Why do I see all the big brands selling in China and EU? Why aren’t those big brands banned from selling in EU because they are also selling in China? Are you saying they are selling different formulas in EU than in China? If so, who is checking what formulas they are selling in China? I see them selling the same thing. Or, are the rest of us all interpreting your laws in the wrong way? Please enlighten us. 2. To truly eco-friendly and healthy beauty brands: I know staying cruelty-free has been an important part of your brand’s ethos, but maybe it’s time to educate your customers and stakeholders about the true impact of staying out of China. Do you want to make decisions for the marketing claim and keep the bunny logo, or should you do the right thing by staying true to your brand’s mission on this planet? 3. To the animal rights group: When you encourage your consumers to boycott brands that enter China because it means they have engaged in animal testing, ask yourself, what are those big companies doing? They are laughing their way to the bank while all the sincere tree-hugging brands struggle for survival because they can’t enter the world’s fastest growing beauty market. 4. To the consumers who truly care about animals and the environment: Who are you really helping when you boycott brands simply because they enter China? Do you know you are helping big brands get bigger and sabotaging smaller natural brands? Also, did you know, by not allowing clean and eco-friendly brands enter China, we are killing coral reefs and fishes in the ocean at the fastest speed in history? Maybe the definition of “cruelty-free” should also apply to innocent lives in the oceans? What if I tell you that your boycott against natural healthy brands entering China is creating a bigger negative environmental impact? No one can force Chinese government to move faster than it is willing to on this issue. That’s a given. And then, watch this video and tell me what we should do.
