Izyum and Balaklia are Ukrainian cities located southeast of Kharkiv. Russian troops captured them in the spring of 2022. The cities were under occupation for about six months and were liberated in September 2022 following a successful counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Defense Forces. The Ukraїner team spoke with all the heroes of this video shortly after the deoccupation, in September 2022. Intense enemy attacks significantly damaged the buildings and infrastructure of Izyum. At least a thousand civilians died as a result of the occupation, with even more people suffered without access to medical care. During the expedition, we met Mykhailo Shevchenko, a former employee of the Izyum police department, who was thrown to the torture chamber by the occupiers, where he spent two weeks. The man shared his memories of how the interrogations took place and what the prisoners' life was like. We also know about a couple of similar torture chambers in Izyum where, the Russian military illegally detained, tortured and killed Ukrainian civilians, soldiers of the territorial defense, policemen, and military personnel. In addition, the video includes footage from the site of the largest mass burial in Izyum, where the bodies of Ukrainians killed by the Russian occupiers and by the shelling were discovered. In Balaklia, we recorded the story of Artem Larchenko, a local resident who was held by the Russian military in a torture chamber set up in a police station. He showed the cells where Ukrainians were tortured and shared his memories of the terrible 46 days of his captivity. According to him, the occupiers grabbed people right from the streets and imprisoned them, ignoring the rights of the detainees and not even trying to reason their suspicions. Despite all the horrors of the occupation, the residents of Izyum and Balaklia bravely resisted and gladly welcomed the liberation. They are confident in the victory of Ukraine and are already making plans to rebuild their hometowns. 🟢 Read us in different languages: https://heylink.me/ukrainer/ Support us: https://ukrainer.net/donate-en/ Ukrainer in English YouTube: / ukrainerinenglish Ukrainer in English Facebook: / ukrainer.eng Ukrainer in English Instagram: / ukrainer_en #ukraine #war #Izium #Balakliia
