A hydrocele is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid or water between the two coverings of the testis. Hydrocele is accompanied by swelling but not all testicular swelling is due to hydrocele. The swelling can be due to a tumor or a pyocele,, hematocele, varicocele, or chylocele. Due to the swelling being due to so many reasons, consultation with a doctor is necessary. 01:30 - Types of hydrocele Hydrocele in Children/Infants Hydrocele in infants is very normal and is found in 15-20% of children. It normally subsides by the time the child is 1 year old but sometimes it does not subside. If the hydrocele is in children then it is called a congenital hydrocele. During the growth of the child in the mother’s womb, when the testes form, a path is created through which fluids and water flow into the testis. But by the time the child is 1 yrs old, this pathway closes and the water and fluid are absorbed. If due to some defect this path doesn’t close, then the hydrocele becomes permanent, and then it is called a congenital hydrocele. Hydrocele in Adults/Men Hydrocele is caused in adults because of three main reasons, 1. Infections, 2. Tumours, and 3. Trauma. Urinary tract infections can reach up to testes and can cause disorders such as epididymitis and orchitis which in turn secrete water and cause secondary hydrocele. In people over the age of 40, testicular tumours can occur and can secrete water, and cause hydrocele. Hydrocele can also be caused by trauma in testes. 03:46 - Hydrocele Treatment If one has hydrocele or has observed early signs of hydrocele, one must visit a doctor.
