“Birdland” Composer: Joe Zawinul (1977) Arranged by: Larry Kerchner (1980) Performed by the Columbia Big Band [now Patuxent Jazz Band (PJB)] Director: Robert Miller Columbia Bands, Inc. Performed: September 10, 2017 The Chrysalis, Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods, Columbia, MD, USA Concert Playlist: • CBB: September 10, 2017 - The Chrysalis The summer of 2017 was incredibly busy for the Columbia Big Band, culminating in our final, most formal concert at the Chrysalis on September 10th. Where the other concerts needed themes and dancing tunes, this concert allowed the band to focus on presenting music for the music’s own sake. The final setlist includes many of the band’s favorites, and allows each section to shine in turn. Joe Zawinul’s “Birdland” is a simultaneous tribute to the iconic jazz club of the same name located on New York’s Broadway, where Zawinul spent many long evenings steeped in the music, as well as to Charlie “Bird” Parker. Recorded originally by Zawinul’s band Weather Report, the tune plays to the strengths of its members, including the legendary bassist Jaco Pistorius and saxophonist Wayne Shorter. This arrangement expands the tight five-piece combo of the original recording into a wide, wild instrumentation for a full Big Band.
