MBTX 904 (EMD GP9) and the caboose MBA C-1 drop four loads of junked ties at the Anderson Regional Transportation Center in Woburn, Massachusetts, to be picked up by the local switcher LA-3 (Pan Am Railways). It's not often I get to see the work extra, and I wasn't planning on seeing it today. Needless to say, it's a welcome surprise. MBTX 904, the "Geep," was acquired by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in 1987. Prior to '87 it belonged to the Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority, for which it served on the now-defunct SEMTA Commuter Rail, also known as the Silver Streak. It was originally built in 1960 for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad. MBA C-1 was built in 1977 for what is now the Canadian Pacific Railway Limited, known then as CP Rail. It would go on to serve for the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario before being acquired by the MBTA. The reasoning behind the unusual reporting mark is simple: MBA was, for a brief time, the official reporting mark of the MBTA.
