We are back for another episode of the Cactus Seed Soil Battle! The oldest Astrophytum and Ariocarpus seedlings are now about a week away from turning 1.5 years old. The second batch is 10 weeks behind at 1 year and 3.5 months old. With summer just around the corner, these seedlings are ready to go outside. In this video, we take a look at how the seedlings are doing and then we move them out to the pergola. Our babies are growing up so fast! Well, "fast" doesn't quite apply in cactus land. Cookie's health problems began in 2022 with a diabetes diagnosis. That same year, she was diagnosed with IRIS stage 2 kidney disease and then hyperthyroidism. Her hyperthyroidism was treated with radioiodine therapy in 2023 in which she was placed on thyroid medication due to the treatment's negative impact on the kidneys. Her kidneys soon declined to IRIS stage 3 kidney disease. I mention needing to go home to give Cookie fluids when I'm out and about in my videos because I've been giving Cookie subcutaneous fluids at home every few days since then. We were doing well for a while with our at-home medical regime of insulin, thyroid medication, and fluids despite another diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease along the way. We held steady for a couple of years. Recently I noticed that Cookie had a sudden drop in weight. Lab work confirmed she has now entered IRIS stage 4 kidney disease. There are no more stages after this except end stage renal failure. Our internal medicine doctor recommended increasing her subcutaneous fluids frequency to every other day. We've been on that new schedule for a couple weeks now but I continue to see her decline. I don't know how much time we have left with Cookie but it feels like it's not going to be long. I'm not entirely sure what will happen to Cookie's Cacti after she's gone. It all depends if her death also ends my motivation to create content, but we won't know until that happens. Until then, Cookie is still here so I'm going to get her in every single video for as long as we can.
