This video shows you the basic pilotage to get you from Portsmouth to Chichester Marina. It's around a 13 Nms passage but is actually fraught with potential hazards; mainly hitting things! The first thing you don't want to hit is the Submerged barrier/ Submarine wall just east of Portsmouth. The second is the huge sandbar, "East Winner" that extends from the east side of Langstone Harbour entrance. The third is the sandbar west of the Chichester channel. If you can avoid all of these, it'll be plain sailing. We did this trip with a gentle easterly breeze and it was quite calm. Be very wary of strong Easterly or Southerly winds if you're navigating these waters as all of these shallow areas can cause the sea to kick up prematurely before it hits land. Also, with a strong ebbing tide and a southerly wind, Chichester can be very uncomfortable with big rolling waves that have a very short wavelength; very easy to submarine your boat! Chichester Harbour itself can be very busy on a lovely day particularly with young children out sailing. We must have seen 300 small vessels on this day alone. Really keep an eye on your depth as you navigate through the harbour. Enjoy the video, many more to come! Captain Tim.
