National Dairy FARM Program’s Jamie Jonker defines antibiotic stewardship as the judicious and responsible use of antibiotics to control, prevent and treat disease in our dairy animals. The FARM Antibiotic Stewardship Program provides ongoing education for the dairy community on the responsible use of antibiotics to keep cows healthy and our milk supply safe. This Quick Convo covers what’s expected of dairy farmers from the Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR), written protocol and herd health plan for common diseases and required treatment records. He also covers resources available to dairy farmers to ensure best management practices. Jamie Jonker, Ph.D., is the vice president of sustainability and scientific affairs for the National Milk Producers Federations and has general responsibilities in areas including animal health and welfare, animal biotechnology, dairy farm biosecurity, dairy farm air and water quality, dairy farm sustainability and technical service issues. He has been with the FARM Program since it began in 2009. The National Dairy FARM Program’s Quick Convos series is an interactive opportunity for dairy farmers to learn about the FARM Program.
