The shortage of foreign workers in the country was caused by the policy adopted by the Pakatan Harapan government, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan told the Dewan Rakyat today. He said his predecessor, M. Kulasegaran (PH-Ipoh Barat), had imposed a moratorium on the intake of Bangladeshi labourers in September 2018 and this had led to the shortage. On top of that, said Saravanan, things became worse after Malaysia closed its international borders in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 global pandemic. "Ipoh Barat (Kulasegaran) imposed a moratorium on Bangladeshi workers on Sept 1, 2018. Since then, until he lost his position as the minister, no foreign workers from Bangladesh were allowed to enter. "When the government changed and we took over, (the) Covid-19 (pandemic) happened and no workers could come in. "Because of his (Kulasegaran's) mistake, we had no Bangladeshi workers for almost three years." Saravanan was responding to Kulasegaran, who had earlier asked the former to state the reasons the government could not resolve the foreign labour shortage. Kulasegaran had also asked about the number of migrant workers who had entered Malaysia this year. In response, Saravanan said the government resolved the shortage issue after Malaysia's borders reopened in April and an agreement was reached between the country and Bangladesh in June. ---------------------------------- #NST #NSTTV visit us at www.nst.com.my our Facebook www.facebook.com/nstonline more news at www.twitter.com/NST_Online and also www.instagram.com/nstonline
