Three-hundred-thousand homes by the end of the decade. It’s a seriously ambitious target set out in the new national housing plan – and one that might not be as realistic as Housing Minister James Browne has suggested. The Government may have just gone and made a 10-word rod for its own back. The scrapping of annual targets will buy the Coalition some time in the hope that the vast array of mechanisms, housing schemes and levers pulled in recent months – all aimed at increasing supply – will come to bear at election time in late 2029.
