New York Jets Player, Nick Mangold, Dies Waiting for a Transplant

In 2006, Nick Mangold, a New York Jets player, was diagnosed with a genetic defect that caused chronic kidney disease. In early October of 2025, he made a plea to the public with a request for a kidney donor with type O blood. On October 26, 2025, Mangold passed away from complications of his kidney disease. PIX 11 spoke with LiveOnNY President & CEO Leonard Achan about the importance of organ donation. Approximately 5,600 people in the U.S. die each year while on the organ transplant waiting list, which averages to about 13 deaths per day. This is a decrease from previous years due to an increase in organ donors, but there are still over 100,000 people waiting for a transplant. (Source: OrganDonor.Gov)
