This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. How do you go from not being able to run one lap around a track to qualifying for the first women's Olympic Marathon Trials? Hard work, dedication, and pushing to reach lofty goals helped Jane Buch and her husband/coach, Tom, find their way as they ran away from home... and back again. Jane, and her husband Tom, are retired educators from Smithesville who have traveled throughout the world running marathons since the late 1970's. After Tom took up the position as cross country coach, the Buch's became avid runners. What started as a hobby transformed into something special after Jane won the 1981, 1982, and 1983 Bank One Marathon at Columbus. Their success brought presents from Nike as well as an exclusive feature on the Wheaties cereal box. From there, the two ran overseas, competing in China, Japan, Southeast Asia, most of Europe, the Amazon River, and their favorite - Antarctica. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
