Some couples have a very high risk of passing on an inherited condition to their children because they carry a mutation in a particular gene. It is possible for couples like that to go through IVF and produce several embryos, which we can subsequently test to see whether they've inherited those genetic defects that would cause the disease. This can be done for patients who are fertile as well as infertile. Several embryos usually produced, they're grown usually for about five days, a small number of cells are taken from each one, put into a little test tube, that’s sent to Juno genetics where we amplify the tiny amount of genetic material in each of those tubes and examine it. We can usually see the mutation that may be present there, and other markers of the disease as well, allowing us to have a very accurate test. This can then be used to recommend embryos for transfer to the uterus that have a very low risk of the inherited condition. By doing this, any pregnancy that begins has an extremely low risk of being affected, and therefore the likelihood of having to contemplate pregnancy termination, or the birth of an affected child, is greatly, greatly diminished.
