Police have imposed restrictions on protests in Newcastle as forces across the country prepared to tackle any further outbreaks of violence and rioting over the weekend. Officers were given extra powers to control the movement of demonstrators, stop and search them for weapons and request the removal of face coverings, Northumbria police said. The legal orders were made in advance of a planned protest in the centre of Newcastle, amid fears that the start of the new football season could bring further unrest due to a potential link between rioters and football hooligans.
