This book by Steven Frank features the hundreds of posters AL COLE made for famous and not-so- famous musical performers from 1980 to 2013 from shows in London, Toronto and Oshawa. You will find out that Al was much more than a poster designer in this unique illustrative 320 page book. The title of the book YOUNG FAST & SCIENTIFIC is from the name of his radio show on CHRW in London in the early 80's and it in turn comes from a song by NYC's The Dictators. The foreward to the book is courtesy of Andy Shernoff the writer of that song. A thank you to those that helped bring this labour of love to fruition. Contributing writers include What Wave Dave O'Halloran, Brian Lambert, Patrick Nagle, Sue Weigand, Jason King, Lou Molinaro, Craig Laskey, Steve Kane and Erin Hagen. “What are the chances you have heard of these long closed punk clubs-the Cedar Lounge, The Embassy or the Star Club? It doesn’t matter if you haven’t - this book is a powerful cultural document.” Charlie Angus Former bass player with L’Étranger, political shit disturber “A stunning tribute not only to a key contributor to Canadian DIY culture, but to a pivotal moment in time for art and music altogether . . . this book is an exceptional time capsule. We are lucky to have it.” Liz Worth Author of Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History of Punk in Toronto and Beyond “That most rare, but most welcome breed: a book which is actually just as much fun to look at as it is to read.” Gary Pig Gold Music writer and record producer “He truly helped make the scene.” Don Pyle Writer/Musician “The art in these posters were often the only sign of life in many cities throughout the late 70s and early 80s . . . they were a sign of hope and cultural unity.” Tom Wilson Musician/Artist “The Ontario touring circuit of London/Toronto/Oshawa was as important as any routing in North America. Al was there, in the centre of it all. . .” Gary Topp Music Promoter “He seemed to have an intuitive understanding of rock as so much more than just music. It was a lifestyle, a reason to live, an inspired passion I feel dripping off every page of this book.” Andy Shernoff Musician, Writer of Young Fast Scientific “Al Cole was a force of nature and so is this book! Steven Frank, with the help of others, has lovingly captured Cole’s unbridled passion for music and local music scenes.” Rob Bowman Grammy Award winning author and music professor Proceeds from the book will be donated to the Al Cole Music Bursary Centennial College, Toronto [email protected]
