CIA Director Tenet walks from crowd of mourners STORYLINE: Central Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet accompanied the body of 32 year old Johnny Michael Spann as it arrived at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland on Sunday. Spann, a C-I-A agent with the covert Special Activities Division, is the first American to die in combat in Afghanistan. He was killed a week ago during a riot by pro-Taliban prisoners at a fortress near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. Spann was believed to be helping to interrogate some of the hundreds of pro-Taliban and al-Qaida prisoners held at the Qala-i-Jhangi fortress by Northern Alliance forces, when prisoners grabbed weapons from their captors and a fierce firefight ensued. His body was only recovered days later when U-S and Northern Alliance forces managed to quell the uprising. Spann, a former marine, became a C-I-A agent in 1999. A resident of Winfield, Alabama, he leaves behind his wife and three young children.
