We've all been brought up to consider 'counting' as the only way to find out 'how many' (the cardinal aspect of number). But what if I told you that by teaching children to count, as their first step, we're actually PREVENTING them form developing essential number sense? 'Number Sense' is knowing the 'fourness of 4' as shown in this video. It gives a child the understanding that all numbers are made up of other numbers and, in turn, then reveals why 2 + 2 = 4 (because there are 2 twos in 4!). In this short video we explore how focusing upon the natural skill of 'subitising' (that we're born with), makes complete sense AND will ensure we don't bring up another generation of those with 'Maths Anxiety' and a belief that to be 'good at Maths' you need the elusive (and non-existent) 'Maths gene'!
