Oliver is the Director of Bands at Alabama State University. Holding 42 years overall in education and being a strong advocate for music programs, his career in music education includes positions as band instructor in the Dayton, Ohio Public School System and director of bands at Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. Oliver holds a bachelor’s in music education from Alabama State University, a master’s of education from Wright State University, and a doctorate in education, North Central University. Since his arrival at Alabama State University in 2000, Oliver has built a solid band program which includes The Mighty Marching Hornets and Pep Bands. Under his leadership, the program from Ohio to Alabama has garnered countless competitive awards including Outstanding Symphonic Band Award, Outstanding Jazz Band Award, 2002 City of Montgomery Certificate of Recognition, and the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award given by National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education. The band has performed around the country including the Georgia Dome, the Ellen Degeneres Show, most recently, the City of Montgomery, Alabama, Office of the Mayor Proclamation, September 25, Director James Oliver Day, Honda Invitational Battle of the Bands Showcase, the MTV Awards and Robin Thicke’s,“Give it to you” video, A&E / Lifetime Network Realty Show “Bama State Style” Sony Picture “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” Motion Picture, Tri Star Film, and the 2019 Tournament of Roses Parade, Pasadena, Ca.
