This comprehensive webinar held on March 5th, 2026 brought together experts from the Center of Excellence for Smart and Green Building (CEDSG) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, to discuss green building strategies for both urban and rural contexts in the Asia-Pacific region. The session featured two main presentations followed by an interactive Q&A discussion. CIRDAP in collaboration with the Non-Aligned Movement Centre for South-South Technical Cooperation (NAM CSSTC), and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia jointly organized this webinar. Esteemed speakers: Dr. Rachmawan Budiarto, Manager, Centre for Development of Smart and Green Building and Dr. Sentagi Sesotya Utami, Director of Center for Development of Smart and Green Building (Cedsgreeb) from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Indonesia served as the speakers in the webinar. Webinar Presenetation and Discussion points: In the webinar, the speakers discussed green principles, renewable energy adoption, sustainable infrastructure development, and behavioral change initiatives related to green buildings in the context of rural development. Dr. Rachmawan presented green building strategies in tropical contexts, discussing five types of green buildings ranging from vernacular/passive design to net-zero energy buildings. He highlighted the challenge of perceived higher costs of green buildings versus actual cost savings, which can be as low as 7% higher initial investment with benefits including 20-30% higher rental returns and significant energy savings of 25-35%. Dr. Sentagi presented on the work of CEDSG in promoting net-zero buildings and sustainable urban development in Indonesia. She highlighted that residential buildings contribute significantly to building-related emissions and emphasized the importance of addressing both operational and embodied carbon emissions throughout a building's lifecycle. Dr. Sentagi outlined key strategies including energy-efficient appliances, passive design, renewable energy integration, and green building certification, while noting that Indonesia's existing green building regulations provide technical guidelines for achieving these goals. The scope of the discussion included: a) Conceptual understanding of green building and sustainable infrastructure principles relevant to rural settings, including energy efficiency, renewable energy use, and environmentally responsible construction practices. b) Exploration of the role of green infrastructure in addressing environmental risks associated with rural infrastructure development, such as land degradation, deforestation, water pollution, and climate vulnerability. c) Discussion of practical experiences, case studies, and best practices in planning, implementing, and maintaining green infrastructure in rural areas. d) Identification of challenges, opportunities, and enabling factors for scaling up green building infrastructure initiatives in rural communities. Brief Bio of the Esteemed speakers: 1. Dr. Ir. Rachmawan Budiarto GP., IPU. He is a doctor of renewable energy (Universitas Gadjah Mada – UGM). He receives certificates of Executive Professional Engineer (IPU) from Indonesia Engineer Association (PII), Greenship Professional (GP) from Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) as well as Energy Manager in Industry and Building from Indonesian Professional Certification Authority (BNSP). Since 2005, he has been/is currently involved in at least 106 sustainable energy and green building projects and at least 28 projects in other fields. Some of these projects were funded by 23 International sources. Currently, he is Director of the Centre for Development of Sustainable Region (CDSR) – Energy Studies Center UGM. He is one of the founders of the Integrated Smart and Green Building (Insgreeb) research group, the Hydrogen and Renewable-Based Variable Energy Storage Technologies (Harvest) research group, and the Centre for Development of Smart and Green Building (Cedsgreeb) collaboration hub. 2. Dr. Sentagi Sesotya Utami, Researcher & Lecturer Sentagi Sesotya Utami is a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability with real work in leading the campus sustainability initiatives of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) as the Manager of the Office of Sustainability. Under her leadership, UGM received impressive ranking that supports global reputation. Acknowledgement of her expertise as a lecture and researcher in the field of ESG/SDG by international funders and government agency within the past 13 years have brought her to the establishment of the Centre of Development for Smart and Green Building (CeDSGeeB), where she serves as the Director. #GreenBuilding #GreenInfrastructure #SustainableDevelopment #RuralDevelopment #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy #EnergyEfficiency #SustainableInfrastructure #GreenArchitecture #EcoFriendly #NetZero #EnvironmentalSustainability #ESG #SmartBuildings #SouthSouthCooperation
