The World Food Programme has been forced to suspend food aid to 1.3 million displaced people in northeast Nigeria, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. As victims of the 15-year Boko Haram conflict struggle to survive, many are resorting to dangerous measures such as venturing into hostile territory to collect firewood or farm. The UN warns that without immediate funding, vulnerable populations may be driven to join armed groups, attempt perilous migrations, or exchange sex for food. Local officials face impossible choices in allocating scarce resources, while aid workers report rising malnutrition cases, particularly among children. The situation is further compounded by Nigeria's economic challenges, with currency devaluation eroding purchasing power even as food prices fall.
