HP can lead to pulmonary fibrosis if the lung inflammation persists for a very long time. If birds are suspected to be the trigger, treatment will be most effective if contact with birds and bird feathers is avoided. Not everyone who has interstitial lung disease (ILD) is sensitized to birds.
