Painting Polymer Clay ~ Antiquing & Highlighting

What Is Antiquing? • Antiquing is using paint to highlight the indents of a pattern. • It is often used to create the appearance of age in a piece or bring out the fine details in a texture. The results vary depending on the texture and paint color used. When Do I Use This Technique? • To age your project: Antiquing is a perfect way to quickly and convincingly age a piece. Darker colors of paint create a worn appearance while highlighting the texture. • To highlight texture: Use light or dark paints to highlight the details in finer textures. Excellent examples of this would be the veins of a leaf or the scratches of a crackle. These could appear dull without the help of the antiquing process. • To hide imperfections: Sometime a project will have an unwanted bump or shiny spot. These problems often show up on the back of a piece. Scratch up the problem area and antiquing. This can not only hide the issue but also add depth to your original design. How Do I Antique My Clay? • The technique itself is relatively simple. • Simply apply paint to your project of choice. Cover the whole piece in paint using a brush or toothbrush. Allow the paint to dry. Use a damp cloth to wipe over the raised areas. • If you want a cleaner look, consider lightly sanding the piece after the initial clean-up. •Once you’re happy with the effect, pop your project back in the oven for 5 minutes to heat set the paint. It’ll ensure a stronger finish. • While not necessary, it is advised to bake your pieces before antiquing. This will prevent damaging your texture and will create a cleaner result.
