STORYLINE: A powerful bomb exploded in a crowd of people celebrating the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday in southwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing at least 52 people and wounding nearly 70 others, authorities said. It was one of the deadliest attacks in recent years. A suicide bomber targeted a procession near a mosque in Mastung, a district in the southwestern province of Balochistan, killing at least 52 and injuring about 50 more, according to local officials. “Fortunately, on the spot where this blast and this incident has happened, I believe that more than 30 casualties are there. So if we get it together, so all together, we have like more than 40 deaths occurred in this incident, and around 55 injured patients we have in all the incident,” said health minister Dr. Amir Muhammad Jogezai. It has not been possible to reconcile these two figures. The vehicle at the time of the explosion was parked near the mosque where devotees were gathering for the religious procession. "The bomber detonated himself near the vehicle of the deputy superintendent of police," said Deputy Inspector General Munir Ahmed. In a separate attack in the neighboring northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, five people were killed and 12 injured at a mosque on the premises of a police station in Hangu. The explosion caused the roof of the mosque to cave in, trapping approximately 30 to 40 under the rubble. No group has claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks, which cast a dark shadow on what is traditionally a day of reverence and celebration for Pakistan's majority Muslim community, raising further concerns about extremism and sectarian violence in the region. Pakistan is set to hold a general election in January.
