(7 Mar 2022) Young Polish scouts were volunteering on Sunday at a reception center at the Medyka border crossing to provide immediate help to scores of exhausted refugees arriving from Ukraine. As thousands of Ukrainians continue to cross the border every day the extent of the desperation and exhaustion of the fleeing civilians is met with generosity. Around 20 young scouts from Poland's ZHP scouting organization were among the many volunteers helping refugees as soon as they cross the border. The young scouts, who came to Medyka from across the country, sleep in tents and nearby hostels to be able to provide daily help to those fleeing the war with Russia. They serve warm food and drinks, offer blankets and a place to rest. The suffering of children is the most "heartbreaking", said 17-year-old Zuzana Koseva. "They (the children) are happy even though they are in a very bad situation, they are happy with one sweet so that's just amazing," she said. The majority of arrivals at the reception centre in Medyka are women with small children, who are extremely tired, according to scouts. "Most of them are just very, very tired, terrified and confused because they don't know what to expect," said Koseva. Donations for Ukrainian refugees are coming from all over the world, said another volunteer scout, Piotr Kwiatowski. "We have (received) goods from Germany, Great Britain, France, a lot of people helping us," he added. 42-year-old Julia Ostrowskaja who fled from Kharkiv, shared her experience having to leave her home behind. "We run away wearing what we had on us, the sporting clothes and not too many belongings. I run away with my two sons. We went to look for a shelter. We found one and we stayed for one week and then we went to Dniepr where we stayed for two days and then we came here," she said. The war, now in its 11th day, has caused 1.5 million people to flee Ukraine. The head of the U.N. refugee agency called the exodus “the fastest-growing refugee crisis in Europe since World War II."
