A shootout inside a Lancaster, South Carolina, Walmart that injured two people was related to gang activity, detectives said Thursday. Lancaster Police Chief Don Roper said the incident began with "an altercation of some sort" between two groups of people at the Highway 9 Bypass West Walmart on April 1. Roper said that a dispute escalated into a full-blown shootout involving at least a half-dozen people. "There is a gang element involved in this interaction," Roper said during a news conference Thursday morning, explaining that detectives are still working to determine the motivation. Roper said at least two people who were hurt took themselves to the hospital. One remains hospitalized, but their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.
