Antibiotic resistance can be found in places like water and soil, but how it spreads in the environment and impacts human health is unknown. Poor sanitation infrastructure can lead to infections and greater use of antibiotics to treat them. To save lives and combat antibiotic resistance, we must improve antibiotic use in humans, animals, and crops; address the discharge of drug production waste containing antibiotics; improve sanitation and antibiotic disposal, including wastewater treatment; promote universal access to safe water; and study how antibiotics and resistance in the environment impact human and animal health.
