Roberto Bertero, at the organ of Turin’s Santuario della Consolata (Church of the Virgin of the Consolation), performs the Adagio from Concerto in D minor, Op.9 No.2, by Tomaso Albinoni. Tomaso Albinoni, a Venetian composer active between the late 17th and the first half of the 18th century, was one of the finest figures of the Italian Baroque. Renowned primarily for his instrumental works, particularly his concertos and sonatas, Albinoni distinguished himself with a clear, balanced, and intensely singable style, free from any excess of virtuosity and always attentive to clarity of melodic expression. The Adagio presented here is excerpt from the Concerto, Op. 9 No. 2, a collection published in 1722 and dedicated to Maximilian II Emanuel ruler of Bavaria. Originally conceived for instrumental ensemble, the piece is presented here in a transcription for solo organ. This Adagio represents an emblematic example of Albinoni's art: a melodic line of great nobility, supported by a sober yet intensely eloquent harmony, in which the slow tempo becomes a space for meditation and profound emotional concentration. The seemingly simple writing actually reveals a compositional skill of the highest order, capable of creating tension and relaxation through minimal musical gestures. While it does not enjoy the universal fame of the famous Adagio in G minor traditionally associated with Albinoni - a twentieth-century composition reworked by Remo Giazotto - this authentic Adagio has nothing to envy in terms of inspiration, emotional intensity, and quality of writing. On the contrary, it bears direct and indisputable testimony to the greatness of the Venetian composer, offering music of profound expressiveness, capable of speaking with a sober yet penetrating voice through the sound of the organ. In this version, the organ becomes the privileged vehicle of meditation and singability, giving the piece an almost contemplative dimension, perfectly in line with the intimate and meditative spirit of Albinoni's language. 💬 If you enjoyed this performance, please like the video and subscribe for more organ masterpieces!
