When I uploaded "I'll Wear the Banner" for Easter, I looked over the song list, and I noticed that Pap and his brother Ray sang several songs from Jim and Jesse's 1966 album, "Sing Unto Him a New Song." They sang the title track, I'll Wear the Banner, Angel Mother, and In God's Eyes. I wound up listening to all of Jim and Jesse's album online and enjoyed it very much. I found that it was one of their most solid albums. I can remember seeing the album (with its striking cover) at my Uncle Ray's house back in the '80's. When I listened to the song "How Much are You Worth," I remembered that Pap and Granny sang the song together when I was a kid. I asked Granny if she would be willing to take a momentary break from her crochet long enough to sing with me on the chorus. She agreed, and I didn't even have to bribe her with a trip to Walmart! :-) I believe that somewhere among all my tapes and CD's, I have a recording of her and Pap singing the song back in the day. If I can find it, I'll upload it too. Of course, back then, Granny could sing out much louder on her harmony part. I think she and Pap probably sang the song in G Major, two frets higher than where we did it here. Although it's very melancholy, I think this is a great song that paints a true portrait of how life (and death) can be if we set the wrong priorities. According to Spotify, this song was written by J. Nix. When I searched, I turned up a lot of musician folks with a first name that starts with a J and the last name Nix, but all of them are clearly too young to have been this J Nix. I hope you enjoyed this video. April 21st, will be Ira Louvin's birthday, and I'll upload a song that he wrote as a tribute to him. Have a great weekend!
