With our base in La Spezia, we make a single day trip to Cinque Terre on rail. Cinque Terre is a string of centuries-old seaside fishing villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline with 5 popular villages, namely Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. UNESCO included the whole Cinque Terre in the World Heritage List as a "cultural landscape" as well as a national park in 1997. In each of the 5 towns, colourful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces, harbours are filled with fishing boats and restaurants with seafood specialties. The Sentiero Azzurro cliffside hiking trail links the villages and offers sweeping sea vistas. We bought the Cinque Terre card that includes train rides to the villages and hiking pass into the national park.
