Enrique Granados: Berceuse from Escenas Románticas No. 2 Clark Bryan , piano Piano: Yamaha S7X Maintained by Darryl Fabiani at D&S Pianos Piano microphones: AKG C12B Room: AKG C414 Enrique Granados (Pantaleón Enrique Joaquín Granados Campiña, 1867–1916) was one of Spain’s most poetic composers and a celebrated concert pianist of the late Romantic era. Born in Lleida, Catalonia, Granados became a central figure in Spanish musical nationalism, blending lyrical intimacy with rich pianistic colour. Trained in Barcelona and later in Paris, Granados studied with Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot, whose emphasis on refined tone, pedalling, and expressive nuance profoundly shaped Granados’s pianistic style. He was also deeply influenced by the composer and musicologist Felip Pedrell, whose ideas helped ground Granados’s work in Spanish artistic identity. Granados achieved early success with his opera *María del Carmen*, which earned the admiration of King Alfonso XIII. National recognition followed in 1903 when he won first prize at the Madrid Royal Conservatory for his *Allegro de concierto*, Op. 46. His most enduring masterpiece, Goyescas (1911), was inspired by the paintings of Francisco Goya and remains one of the great monuments of the piano repertoire. Its success led Granados to expand the work into an opera, which premiered in New York in 1916 to great acclaim. During this visit, Granados performed for President Woodrow Wilson and recorded piano rolls for the Aeolian Company—his only surviving recordings. Tragically, Granados’s life was cut short in March 1916 when the cross-Channel ferry SS Sussex was torpedoed during World War I. In a final act of devotion, Granados attempted to save his wife, Amparo, and both perished at sea. His death shocked the musical world, silencing a composer whose music continues to speak with extraordinary tenderness, elegance, and Spanish soul. #EnriqueGranados #SpanishComposer #CatalanComposer #ClassicalPiano #RomanticMusic #Goyescas #SpanishMusic #PianoRepertoire #MusicHistory #ComposerLife #GoldenAgeOfPiano #ClassicalMusic #PianistComposer #ArtAndMusic
