How to heat treat 5160 and similar spring steels using simple techniques

In this video we show you how to heat treat simple alloy steels like 5160 and simple carbon steels like 1084 and 1095 etc. using only your forge. We are hoping to show you that if you are starting out you don’t need expensive heat treat ovens to heat treat these steels to get good results. Of course if you wish to get the most out of the steel you use, you will need to use a heat treat oven that you can dial in to exact temperatures. In this video we are heat treating 5160 or a similar spring steel. We used Knife Steel Nerds and New Jersey Steel Baron as a reference to what temperature, how long to soak the steel when we thermal cycle it, and harden it. We did not show the tempering cycles. We used the kitchen oven set at 375 degrees F. for an hour to temper it and then we repeated it a second time.
