Support Our Channel : / periscopefilm This tribute to the Third Army in World War II details its 281 days of combat duty, from France and Belgium and into Germany in 1944-45, including the Battle of the Bulge. Features footage of General George S. Patton and the troops he commanded. Post-war, the Third Army established headquarters at Fort McPherson, Georgia, where veterans and recruits trained in advanced military tech, tanks, and parachuting to stay formidable. In Europe, under General Patton, the "Lucky" Third Army used superior tactics to defeat Germans after landing at Utah Beach, breaking out at Avranches, and liberating Saint-Malo, Brest, Rennes, and Paris. They fought intense battles, destroyed strongholds like Brest’s submarine base, and reached Verdun and Nancy. Metz fell after fierce combat, opening Germany. During the Battle of the Bulge, 300,000 troops pivoted to save Bastogne, breaking the siege by December 26 with air support after Patton’s prayer cleared the skies. They then breached the Siegfried Line and Rhine, capturing towns like Frankfurt. Undefeated, they secured victories at Metz, Bastogne, and the Rhine. Germany collapsed, and Patton honored soldiers like Private Harold A. Garman with the Medal of Honor for their 281-day, 1,000-mile campaign. 0:00: Third Army returns, sets up at Fort McPherson; veterans and recruits train in new tech. 0:36: Soldiers master tanks, communication, and parachuting for emergencies. 1:37: Goal to maintain a strong combat force. 2:13: In Europe, Third Army relied on tactics, not luck. 2:38: Patton’s strategy: relentless attacks with air support from 19th Tactical Air Command. 3:46: Surprise attack at Avranches cut off Brittany after Utah Beach landing. 4:55: Advanced on Saint-Malo, Brest, Rennes, and Paris. 5:38: Intense street fighting in Saint-Malo. 6:21: Bombed German stronghold into surrender. 7:32: Liberated Brest and Rennes, freeing paratroopers. 9:35: Artillery destroyed Brest’s submarine base. 10:24: Air support and bridges aided rapid advance. 11:34: Reached Verdun, Nancy, and targeted Metz. 12:37: Metz fell after bloody battle. 13:24: Battle of the Bulge began December 16; Third Army pivoted to Bastogne. 14:49: 300,000 troops marched in harsh winter. 16:11: Patton’s prayer cleared skies for air support. 17:29: Broke German lines, lifted Bastogne siege by December 26. 17:47: Pushed past Siegfried Line and Rhine. 18:42: Captured Frankfurt and Wiesbaden as Germany fell. 19:07: Key victories: Metz, Bastogne, Rhine crossing. 19:42: German divisions surrendered. 20:06: German generals capitulated; war ended. 20:25: Patton awarded Medal of Honor to Garman. 20:41: Third Army honored for 281 days, 1,000 miles.
