Small finds exhibition and Roman Temple opening ceremony. The foundations you can see in the movie are a reconstruction of the footprint of a Romano-British temple discovered during archaeological investigations prior to the development of Watling Place The temple was discovered about 70m north-west of this reconstruction which has been built to reflect the orientation and dimensions of the original. The temple, which dates to the 1st century, was located alongside a Roman road that provided means of travel, communication, and trade between the main Roman road, Watling Street, and the banks of the Medway . The remains of the temple reflect the established classical style for such buildings. They comprised two rectangular areas: an inner cella (small chamber), which measured 6.75m by 5.7m, and an outer covered walkway, measuring 12.5m by 11.5m, the roof of which may have been supported by columns. Evidence suggests the walls of the temple were built with rounded and angular flints. These nodules have been used in the reconstruction. The re-creation was made possible through the efforts of Newington History Group who worked closely with the archaeologists and Persimmon Homes to collect and store the original fabric of the monument to use it in this reconstruction. The project was completed in August 2021. The Excavation Site Archaeological excavations on the adjacent housing site lasted more than a year and, as well as the road and temple, discovered what appears to be an area of industry associated with a nearby Roman settlement. Investigations revealed a complex of footpaths, trackways and roads including some with traces of wheel ruts. A cart-loading platform with a potential crane structure was exposed next to the western track . Alongside the roads were enclosures and traces of buildings associated with industry and crop processing. Other features included iron bloomery furnaces, crop driers, pottery kilns, quarries, wells, water containers, granaries, and rubbish pits. Human burials, including both cremations and skeletons, were also found on the edge of the industrial area. The industrial area lay to the west of a shallow valley surrounded by hills. It was located 140m to the north of Watling Street, the main Roman road linking London with Kent coast, which is now followed by the A2 . This is the High Street in modern-day Newington.
