'UNJUST INDICTMENT' | U.S. Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-Fla.) responded after being indicted on federal charges alleging she stole $5 million in disaster relief funds and used the money to finance her 2021 congressional campaign. Speaking Thursday afternoon outside her office in Washington, D.C., the congresswoman called the indictment “unjust” and said she will fight the allegations in court. "We spent all week seeing different members getting censured, all in hopes of intimidating and kind of distracting from the Epstein files," said Cherfilus-McCormick. "And I look forward to my day in court so I can prove myself and it's actually state the truth." The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Wednesday that the funds allegedly came from an overpayment on a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract managed by Trinity Healthcare Services, her family’s company. Prosecutors allege she and her brother laundered the money through multiple accounts and disguised campaign contributions as legitimate donations.
