Since the 19th century, the demographics of the Pilsen neighborhood has made many changes. Originally inhabited by German, Polish, Italian, and Czech immigrants, the area was named by Czech immigrants after Plzeň, the fourth largest city in what is currently the Czech Republic. By the late 1950s to early 1960s, there was a great influx of Latinos into Pilsen as they were displaced from the neighborhood currently occupied by UIC and other urban revitalization projects. Although some gentrification is starting to occur in this neighborhood, there is still a strong Hispanic feel to this Lower West Side quadrant of Chicago filled with quaint thrift stores, old fashioned barbershops and Mexican taquerias.
