Why do we say I HAVE HAD? Present perfect tense uses the structure SUBJECT + HAVE/HAS + VERB 3 + OBJECT VERB 3 is also called the PAST PARTICIPLE: gone, had, seen, eaten, etc. VERB 3 for HAVE is HAD. So when the main verb is HAVE, we use: SUBJECT + HAVE/HAS + HAD + OBJECT For example: I have had dinner. She has had a shower. Have you had lunch? Has she had a good time? I haven't had lunch.
