This video was the welcoming address to participants of the international conference, "PALSA 2023" hosted at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY from July 11-14th 2023. Speaker: Joel Brock (https://www.engineering.cornell.edu/p..., Given Foundation Professor of Engineering, School of Applied and Engineering Physics, Cornell University; Director, The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) Date: July 12, 2023 Event: A Prerecorded Welcome Address for PALSA 2023 (https://palsa.chess.cornell.edu/) Location: Ithaca, NY PALSA stands for the Partnership for Advancing Light Sources for Agriculture. Originally founded in 2019, PALSA hosts bi-annual conferences to help leverage the power of synchrotron radiation to address world-wide challenges facing agriculture science. PALSA 2023 Info and Program: https://palsa.chess.cornell.edu PALSA 2023 Playlist: • PALSA 2023 XLEAP Project: https://www.chess.cornell.edu/facilit... PALSA 2023 brought together students, industry representatives, and world-leading scientists in food science, agriculture, plant science and synchrotron instrumentation from Brazil, Canada, and across the USA to share results, science, needs and opportunities relating to the application of synchrotron-based capabilities to these critical scientific domains. Here, Joel explains the origin and importance of PALSA in accelerating plant and soil research using advanced synchrotron-based techniques. He also highlights a now ongoing project called XLEAP (https://www.chess.cornell.edu/facilit..., which will be CHESS's first dedicated microprobe beamline, and which will be specifically optimized to serve Plant and Environmental Sciences. PALSA highlights research that connects genotype to phenotype, enabling scientists to rapidly screen large numbers of crop varieties for traits like disease resistance and drought tolerance. The program also explores soil microscale structure, plant–soil interactions, and processes that shape agricultural systems from “soil to shelf.” With its unique infrastructure, scientific expertise, and close ties to Cornell’s agricultural research ecosystem, Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source is helping remove key bottlenecks in agricultural science—and paving the way toward a more secure and sustainable food future.
