Why do the Dutch have lower obesity rates? After interviewing Dr. Vollaard, I'm reflecting on how they cycle everywhere as transportation—expending energy without even thinking about it. The problem with exercise plans is they require effortful, conscious decisions: "I've got to go to the gym after work." That type of effort is hard to sustain. It's much easier when activity is just "baked into your everyday." Simple ideas: Take stairs instead of lifts, walk or cycle to local shops, get off public transport one stop early.
