In the early 1990s, rumors of a mysterious wreck off the coast of New Jersey led a group of daring American divers to an extraordinary discovery. The massive submarine bore no identifying marks and lay 230 feet beneath the waves, in crushing depths where oxygen turns toxic, and nitrogen plays dangerous tricks on the mind. Driven by obsession, divers pushed deeper into the silt-covered wreck. A father and son team ventured too far inside the twisted corridors—trapped in the depths, they would make a desperate ascent that neither would survive. But among their discoveries was a knife engraved with the name "Horenburg." This revealed the submarine's German origins and deepened the mystery. No wartime records mentioned a U-boat operating in these waters. The discovery challenged everything historians knew about submarine warfare off America's coast. According to official documents, every German U-boat lost in the Atlantic had been carefully accounted for. Each had its own story, its own final resting place. But for half a century, this one had kept its secrets.
