On projects where all thread rod is required, it is often more effective to use all thread stock rather than to cut round bar and thread to specifications. The Steel Supply Company stocks a full range of all thread stock from 3/8” diameter to 2” diameter. Threaded rod is in stock in plain finish, zinc blue, and hot dip galvanized. Grades stocked are A-307, Grade 55, and B7. Grade A-449 is also stocked and required frequently on DOT and transportation projects. When it is specified, the fabricator should be certain the mill certifications clearly state the rod meets A-449. The Department of Transportation requires the steel be melted and made in the USA. A-449 certifications should clearly state this. With all threaded rod, it is important to understand Grade A-307 is threaded to a commercial nut fit, otherwise known as 1A. This has the widest tolerance of the UNC specifications. If the threaded rods are required to meet ASTM F1554, they would need to be threaded to UNC 2A, which has a closer tolerance. In these cases, the fabricator should specify Grade 55, or Grade B7. Regarding country of origin and mill certifications, often Grade A-307 has the threads rolled in the USA, but the country of origin of the steel cannot be determined. To ensure strict adherence to melted and made in the USA requirements, we recommend the fabricator specify Grade 55 or Grade B7.
