British engineering porn alert! A few videos ago I drove the new Mini E to Swindon, where I drove the Swind E Classic converted Austin Mini. The same company who makes the latter - Swindon Power Train - is a fascinating one for me. Back in the 1970s and '80s (when called Swindon Race Engines) they were renown for building Cosworth DFV Formula 1 engines. In the 1990s they built BTCC TOCA engines. Today? They still make the British Touring Car engines, but within the same building they also design and make battery packs and electric drivetrains for classic cars, top end wiring looms and engine parts for exotic vehicles, and £20,000 hyper e-bikes that are restricted (!) to 60mph. The newest release from Swindon is their modular e-Axle kit that will shortly be launching. Prices have not yet been confirmed, but the final 80kW HPD unit will weigh less than 50kg inc motor, transmission, oil, everything. I tried to show as much as possible during our tour, but Swindon have to be confidential about some of their clients. For me this episode really encapsulates the CarPervert mantra, because here is a British company pioneering in both piston and electric power. They are pushing boundaries on two and four wheels.
