Hi! I didn’t feel like making a full review video, so here’s a review of the board that I wrote. This keyboard is the Me TKL from Matrix Labs, who are well known for making some crazy board designs, and while this one is a lot more tame in my opinion, it’s still quite unique. Similar to other Matrix Labs keyboards, there were a lot of different color options for the ME TKL and I decided to go with Blue Star because I really liked the shade of blue shown in the promotional material and I thought the sparkle coating was really interesting. However when I got the board, the color didn’t really match the render and looked much darker, to the point that I thought I got the wrong color. I know that colors are very dependent on lighting, and if I look at the board under whiter lights, it does look more blue. It still definitely looks nowhere near the color that was shown in the IC, and to be honest, I was a little disappointed about that. One thing that I was kind of iffy about during the group buy process was regarding the accent color for the top badge and corner accent for the Special Edition boards. They didn’t announce the color beforehand and they said that it would be a mystery color, so I was kind of worried that they would pick something that I wouldn’t like, but thankfully I got red. It wasn’t my first color of choice and I would’ve preferred something else like the orange they showed in the IC or maybe something like a lighter blue or white, but it is what it is. Building this board was actually pretty annoying since there wasn’t a good build guide to follow, so there were a couple parts where I wasn’t sure if I was installing it correctly. I figured it out and it wasn’t too bad for me since I’ve built quite a few boards myself, but I could imagine it being daunting for someone who hasn’t done this before, since the instructions aren’t very detailed. The keyboard machining and packaging overall felt really nice and high quality other than the double sided adhesive strips for the feet that for some reason did not stay on for me. The typing feel for this board has a lot of variations due to the mounting style where you can control which plate mounting strips you want to screw in, the number of screws per plate strip and the tightness of the screws. It’s very interesting and allows a lot more customization, though I suspect that most people will want to go for a more flexible configuration. I decided to screw in the top and bottom strips with screws only on the sides and not the middle. I also left out the plate strips on the side, which provides a nice bounce. I’m sure that I could probably get even more flex by removing some more strips, but I wasn’t sure how that would affect structural integrity. Personally, I think my configuration is pretty nice and I would recommend you try it out if you happen to be an owner of a Me TKL. The typing sound as you can hear is pretty muted due to all the foam. I decided to include all dampening material, because I wanted to experience how the board was designed. It’s a nice sound for most people and one that many people are quite used to now. Of course if you hate foam, you could simply just not include it in your build. For those who are unsure, testing configurations can be difficult because unfortunately this keyboard is solder only, so it’s a massive pain if you end up wanting to remove the foam or vice versa (unless you decide to millmax your PCB). In conclusion, the Matrix Me TKL is a very nice board with an interesting mounting style and a good typing feel/sound. It’s a unique board with an interesting badge gimmick that allows you to customize the keyboard to make it personal along with a ton of different color options. It’s a keyboard that I’m sure many would love in their collection…except I’m not one of them. When I originally participated in the group buy, I was really excited for this keyboard and I thought it would be a permanent member in my keyboard collection due to its cool accent and badge. However, now that I have it on hand, I don’t like it as much as I thought I would. It’s definitely a case of “it’s not you, it’s me” because I’m sure many owners of the Me TKL love their keyboards. I think that it might be due to the fact that I now have a lot more keyboards compared to when I first joined this group buy and when I compare it to my other keyboards, it doesn’t actually stand out as much as you would think. Ultimately it’s just a matter of personal preference and not something wrong with the keyboard. Not really sure what I’ll end up doing with it right now, but it’s definitely possible that I might sell it. We’ll see 🙂. __________________________________________________________________________ Links Me TKL IC https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=...
