For photos and more information: https://www.rubylane.com/item/689289-... http://www.TheSteffenCollection.com Portraits of famous people and farm animals were very popular themes in Staffordshire pottery. Today we are looking at a delightful Staffordshire creamer in the shape of a cow. Bright polychrome colours adorn the surface with a lusterware glaze. This technique of firing a final glaze with shiny metallic compounds over a ceramic glaze dates all the way back to Mesopotamia in the early 9th century. The six towns that produced Staffordshire were situated on a good source of clay, salt, lead and coal - materials that were vital for the production of earthenware and porcelain. It became one of the largest producers of ceramics in Britain in the 18th century and by the 19th century, the market for Staffordshire pottery expanded to exports around the world.
